SKIDDING RESISTANCE AND ROUGHNESS MEASUREMENTS ON ROADS WITH THE PENDULUM APPARATUS AND THE DISCHARGE METER - NEW STUDIES

In connection with the instructions for combined skidding resistance and roughness measurements with the pendulum apparatus and the discharge meter, published by the Forschungsgesellschaft fuer das Strassenwesen, Cologne, in 1972, a report is presented on studies of the reliability of the measurements with these instruments which were carried out at the Institute for Roads and Transportation, Technical University of Berlin. The use of the portable equipment is restricted to low speeds. The reference speed is 40 km/h, measured with the locked wheel. The causes of scatter are examined: selection of measuring points for the pendulum apparatus, non-uniformity of the road surface, rubber conduction bodies, temperature, operation of the equipment, and weathering. The influence of surface texture is explained in four examples. An appendix gives the mathematical principles for the scatter of the individual values and for the combined probability. /TRRL/
