A NEW MOTORWAY PAVEMENT WITH A ROADBASE MADE OF AGGREGATE BOUND WITH BLAST FURNACE SLAG

UNA NOUOVA SOVRASTRUTTURA AUTOSTRADALE CON FONDAZIONE IN MISTO GRANULARE LEGATO CON SCORIE D'ALTOFORNO

The author describes a new type of pavement in which the roadbase contains blast furnace slag, and the total thickness of the pavement structure is reduced. A comparison is made of the new and the classic types of pavement with reference to the multi-layer design method. Stresses and anticipated deformations in the various pavement types are then calculated in accordance with the three layer model of Peattle and Jones and in accordance with the elastic multilayer method. The result is a new pavement having only three layers to be used with supporting subsoil (CBR = 5), having a total thickness of 51 cm and including 6 cm of bituminous wearing course, 10 cm of bituminous roadbase and 0/25.35 cm of aggregate mixed with blast furnace slag. /TRRL/
