US PLANS PACESETTER FOR M-WAY DESIGN
The forecast made by the chief engineer to america's New Jersey Turnpike Authority, that in the future highways will be designed whth widely separated carriageways, is reported, and the design of the Governor Driscoll Expressway (the latest extension to the New Jersey turnpike) is described. Previous stages in the development of the turnpike are reported in order to explain the philosophy behind the design of the expressway. Roadways separated by narrow medians led to a number of severe opposite direction accidents so median barriers were developed. When the roadways were widened, at a later stage, the adjacent residential areas were adversely affected. It is explained that as a result of this experience, land 600 ft wide has been acquired for the new expressway in order to provide A wide buffer between the roadway and adjoining property, and to allow for future development to take place in the 278 ft wide median. The expressway design is also reported to incorporate features to protect the environment both during construction and after the highway is opened. /TRRL/
