DEVELOPMENT AND PRODUCTION OF BESSEMER AND LAKE ERIE QUICK-DROP SELF-CLEARING OPEN-TOP HOPPER CARS
The railroad and carbuilder cooperated in development of a specialized open-top car for handling coal and ore, taking into account granular material characteristics, bin design, material behavior under different weather conditions, compaction and car geometry. Gate design was particularly critical and prototype cars displayed problems which had not been anticipated. When other problems developed in production cars, inspections and statistical studies were made of impact speeds, car-handling techniques, use of car shakers and dimensional variations. It was developed that periodic maintenance would be necessary to assure the availability and productivity for which these cars were designed.
