THE MINIBRIDGE THAT MAKES THE ILA BOIL
The International Longshoreman's Assn. is opposing the new shipping concepts--minibridge and landbridge--that are shrinking its work force. Minibridge, which moves containerized cargo overland, bypassing traditional ports and the Panama Canal, is meeting increased resistance from dock workers. Steamship lines, railroads and shippers like minibridge since it serves to reduce some costs and speeds time of movement. The Longshoremen and Atlantic Ports have been opposing the minibridge, having taken their case to the Federal Maritime Commission. Final decision is not expected by FMC until 1976.
