RECOMMENDED PRACTICE FOR SEGMENTAL CONSTRUCTION IN PRESTRESSED CONCRETE

This guide on segmental construction presents recommendations for the design and construction of precast prestressed concrete structures which are composed of individual segments that are tied together using post- tensioning. The report places major emphasis on bridge construction. The recommendations cover the fabrication, transportation and erection of precast component segments, the construction of joints, details of tendons and anchors, and design considerations applicable to segmental construction. Methods of casting, formwork, concrete, joint surfaces, and bearing areas are reviewed, and plant handling, methods of eraction and erection tolerances and discussed. Cast-in-place joints, dry-packed joints, grouted joints, epoxy-bonded joints and metal joints are considered, and recommendations are made regarding sheathing, anchor plates, tendon layout, placement and stressing of tendons, grouting, and unbonded tendons. Design aspects considered here include those of segments for box girder bridges, segments for decked I-Beams, force transfer between segments, supplemental reinforcement, bearing and anchorage, and couplers.
