THE SAFETY FACTOR IN NON-LINEAR STRUCTURAL PROBLEMS
LE FACTEUR DE SEURITE DANS LES PROBLEMES STRUCTURELS NON LINEAIRES
Within the framework of the limit-state probability theory, a logical step to take is to inquire whether safety must be linked to the overall operation of the structural or to the local behaviour of the sections. Although the solution adopted greatly affects the probability of reaching limit states and can lead to important consequences in the field of applications, this problem has not been seriously considered. To solve in a rational manner, the author proposes to progressively introduce semi-probability correction factors. An attempt is made to propose methods of quantitatively defining various parameters and to arouse the interest of research workers in this problem. Some concrete cases are outlined, in which the progressive introduction of factors can be of help in interpreting correctly some aspects of the theory of structures. /TRRL/
