PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE USE OF STEEL STUDDED TYRES FOR ROAD SAFETY
DIE PROBLEMATIK DER VERWENDUNG VON STAHLSTIFTREIFEN FUER DIE SICHERHEIT IM STRASSENVERKEHR
Studded tyres lead to permanent damage of the road (tracking and surface irregularities). Since there are limits to improving the wear resistance of surfacings, and since speed limits for vehicles equipped with studded tyres are often exceeded, road authorities are eager to ban studded tyres. In order to increase safety during slippery conditions, the use of steel core tyres, outside temperature indicators and black-ice warning equipment is recommended. The winter damage caused by studded tyres have a negative effect on accidents over the whole year; water-filled ruts cause cars to skid, and spray plumes from cars ahead or passing reduce visibility. The abraded slurry destroys centre road markings and dirties edge markings. Repair work necessitates the building of sites which are not only expensive in time but also contribute to accidents. /TRRL/
