IN PRAISE OF BIKERS, HIKERS, AND CROWDED CARS
The energy requirements for automobiles in 1968 added up to 16,000 trillion Btu, 50% of which was consumed directly as gasoline. Enormous energy savings could be obtained by walking or the use of bicycles, buses, and railroads. The energy efficiency of cars could be increased by using smaller cars with lower horsepower, carrying more passengers, and driving at lower speeds. Because our oil imports are increasing rapidly, oil production causes environmental prlblems, and the world supply of petroleum is limited, changes in the present mode of passenger transportation should be considered.
