IDEAS ON PAVEMENT STRENGTHENING

ALGUNAS IDEAS SOBRE EL REFUERZO DE FIRMES

A project for the strengthening of a road opened to traffic consists in selecting (1) the best time to start strengthening operations, (2) the solution to adopt, and (3) the design of thicknesses. The selection of the most appropriate time can be made with the help of deflection measurements and evaluation of the psi or service index. Pavement design methods can be classified into 3 groups: (1) extension of methods used in the planning of new pavements (AASHO, the asphalt institute, the Russian method by ivanoff, etc); (2) methods based on deflection measurements (colas, desvignes, etc); and (3) methods based on rational empirical criteria (jeuffroy and bachelez). Details are given of the desvignes method which uses a graph showing the minimum number of passes of a typical axle and the deflection recorded in the spring, which gives the thickness of strengthening. Specifications are put forward for the distribution of thicknesses, and attention is drawn to the use of polyester-reinforced bituminous layers for strengthening. This method improves the distribution of traffic loads, prevents cracking and enables flexible pavements in need of repair to be covered. /TRRL/
