NEW DIRECTIONS IN PARKING DESIGN

If a parking garage is not to become functionally obsolete in the future, design must keep pace with the changing size of cars. It is possible by the use of clear-span construction and the appropriate modular width to design parking facilities meeting the highest standard of acceptability and close to maximum space efficiency for large cars, and capable of conversion to the parking of small cars with a gain in capacity of almost 50 percent. Problems to be solved before the full advantage of convertible parking can be realized include consideration of zoning laws which permit variations in parking angle degrees from 43 to 90 in different jurisdictions, and insuring that only small cars go into the area striped for them and that only large cars be permitted in large-car areas.
