CHARACTERISTICS OF CARRIAGEWAY SURFACING
The aim of this paper is to define what the user requires of road surfacings and to indicate how these requirements can be met with the different forms of surfacing available. The properties considered are riding quality, resistance to skidding, visibility, noise and splash and spray. Standards are now available by which the riding quality and resistance to skidding can be assessed. It is also now possible to determine when and by how much particular roads need to be strengthened so that they can continue to carry the traffic loads offered. There is thus the prospect of moving towards uniform standards of road maintenance in which funds available are used in the most economical way to meet users' NEEDS. /TRRL/
