THE BOSPORUS BRIDGE, A BRIDGE WHICH LINKS CONTINENTS
SIE VERBINDET KONTINENTE-BOSPORUSBRUEKE
The oversaturation of the ferry traffic across the bosporus- 6,124,000 motor vehicles in 1971 - necessitated the construction of a bridge which was planned to be opened to traffic in October, 1973. The suspension bridge, with a centre span of 1074M and side spans 231 and 255M, will be the fourth longest bridge in the world. The planning and construction work and special structural features are briefly described. At the centre of the bridge there is A clearance of 64M. There will be 2 three-lane carriageways each 10.50M wide and a bicycle lane and pedestrian walk each 2.50M wide. The stiffening beam is a hollow box girder 28M wide. The total width of the bridge is 33.4M. Its weight, including that of the supporting cables is 14.3 metric tons/m. Costs are estimated at DM 140M. /TRRL/
