THICKNESS DESIGN AND QUALITY STANDARDS FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION IN EQUATORIAL AFRICA

Due to the specific geological, geographical and traffic conditions in Africa, the technical standards of any country with a well developed road network cannot be applied there. Based on his experience with African conditions, the author deals with the problems of road planning and construction, in particular cross section and thickness design, which are due to the unfavorable traffic composition (high percentage of trucks, 13 ton axle loads) and are of great importance for cost/benefit calculations. Based on observations of the behaviour of the pavement over several years and maintenance costs the author advocates carriageways of a width of 7 M instead of 6 M and suggests replacing the bituninous surface dressing by surfacings of bituminous mixes at least 4 cm thick. The emphasis on earthworks quality is considered to be excessive. The author supports the suggestion that consistency and air content of the highly plastic soils of central Africa be expressed in per cent as criteria for files and that Proctor values be established as criteria for the improved subgrade. /TRRL/
