EFFECT OF QUARRYING AND PROCESSING METHODS ON THE QUALITY OF LIMESTONE

Limestone being a natural product is subject to variations in quality. Only a few quarries yield really good raw material for the production of limestone and lime products. Non-homogeneous deposits, impurities and disturbed zones require special quarrying and processing measures for the required quality levels in respect to chemical composition and physical properties to be achieved and maintained. To avoid quarrying unsound material the dornap branch of the Rheinisch.- Westf. Kalkwerde proceed as follows: accurate surveying of anomalies as the material is excavated; reduction of bed distances to 10 M maximum; continous control of the chemical loading points by the use of wheel-mounted loaders. The methods of processing should not affect the physical properties of the limestone, although suitable processing methods, impact crushing in particular, might improve the crushing strength of crushed stone, breaking value and the shape of the particles. Results of this kind have been obtained in a large limestone plant. Finally an optical separating machine for separating limestone from dolomite is described. /TRRL/
