THE EFFECT OF TRAFFIC AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS ON ACCIDENTS AT URBAN INTERSECTIONS
Data on various physical and traffic characteristics at 460 intersections throughout New Zealand were obtained from local authorities, and injury accident records were obtained from a search of Ministry of Transport files. A series of computer analyses was carried out on the data, the final runs using multiple regression techniques. A matrix of accident prediction equations was derived which may be used to estimate normal accident rates at specific intersections. Sixty percent or more of the accident rate is due to chance or to variables not studied. A single level change in control usually produces no statistical change in accident rate. /Author/TRRL/
