THE TWO-STAGE HOUSEHOLD SHOPPING MODEL USED IN THE CAMBRIDGE SUB-REGION STUDY
A detailed survey of where households in a sample of settlements do their shopping of different kinds is described. Examination of the data confirmed the hypothesis that shopping of a given kind can be divided into local and non-local by a simple model. The non-local spending can then by allocated by another model to a small number of relevant competing centres. The sample data permitted calibration of the models. These were then used to predict the distribution of shopping for all households in the Cambridge sub-region. Finally the models were used to predict the volume of spending in Cambridge under a variety of assumptions about the development of its shopping facilities and the scale and location of sub-regional growth. The importance of basing such predictions on observed trip data is emphasized. /Author/TRRL/
