THE HARROGATE "CHAUFFEUR-COACH" SERVICE
Since October 1972 an off-peak dial-a-bus service has been operated in Harrogate, using a 15-seat minibus which carries approx. 2000 trips per month to and from the town centre, or 2 to 4 per cent of all off-peak trips to the centre. The service is proving particularly popular with the elderly, and is most successful in the more affluent suburbs. Few people living off the regular route know that the bus can be diverted to their home on request, and only about 9 per cent of trips involve diversions. Quantifiable social benefits exceed the operating deficit, and there are also additional, unquantifiable, benefits generated. /Author/TRRL/
