VACILLATIONS, FLUCTUATIONS OF WHEEL LOAD AND OVERTURNING POINTS OF SEMI-TRAILERS UNDER THE ACTION OF VARIABLE TRANSVERSE FORCES

The influence on tilting limit of vacillations caused by transverse forces acting on the centre of gravity of the vehicle was examined by computer, account being taken of various structural influences. Two theoretical boundaries were then considered. Given a transverse force which starts suddenly and remains constant, the limit of tilting falls below the static value. A rectangular crosswise force of shorter duration results in an increase. An indication was given of the effect of driving speed, steering frequency and damping on the oscillations brought about by periodic sharp steering movements. Tests were conducted almost up to driving limits on a semi-trailer. These measurements, in association with the calculations, provide data on the various conditions which lead to overturning, and on tilting limits. /TRRL/
