GRAVEL QUALITY IN SWEDEN
GRUSKVALITETSFRAAGOR I SVERIGE
Little interest has previously been shown in the quality of gravel in Sweden since natural deposits have been very suitable as road and concrete aggregates. This is due to favourable geological conditions. Due to incipient shortage of gravel, however, material of inferior quality is beginning to be used, and research into gravel quality has been initiated. Hardness of the mineral comprising the gravel is important for the attrition resistance of the aggregate. Micaceous rocks have low resistance while quartzitic minerals are very resistant. Adhesion of the mineral to cement and bituminous binders also affects strength. Micaceous material has poor adhesion. Silicic acid soluble in alkalis causes concrete to swell. Sulphides cause damage to concrete and asphaltic concrete. Rock quality is influenced by method of formation, grain size and grain cementation, and weathering. Gravel quality is also dependent on geological processes such as erosion, transportation and deposition of the gravel material, as well as an chemical action. /TRRL/
