A PROPER PROOF OF THE PUDDING

Although the ready-mixed concrete industry has spent much time in developing its product to overcome earlier quality problems, the methods employed by contractors on-site to carry out cube and slump tests are seen to be often at fault. It is emphasized that such testing must be carried out strictly according to BS1881 with great care being taken to ensure representative samples and correct techniques to ensure accurate test results. Although the slump and cube tests are simple enough to carry out, poor techniques and unkept testing equipment can result in poor results, perhaps wasted material and increased costs. It is also emphasized that authorities should check the ability of a contractor to test concrete on-site as well as that of the ready-mixed concrete supplier to deliver the product. /TRRL/
