CEMENT STABILIZED PAVEMENT LAYERS CAN BE MADE TO WITHSTAND SEVERE SWEDISH WINTER CLIMATE CONDITIONS

Little use has been made of cement stabilisation due to the ample supplies of road aggregate. Owing to the rise in the price of aggregate and oil and bitumen, interest in cement stabilization has increased. The National Road and Traffic Research Institute has made a number of tests over the past decade concerning the resistance of stabilised courses and their capacity to withstand severe climatic conditions. Roads must have high strength in order to prevent permanent deformation, and while cement stabilisation increases strength it does not always result in good riding quality. The cause may be transverse cracking. Tests are in progress on various methods of reducing cracking. Gravel roads are usually strengthened by laying further gravel, and cement stabilisation results in considerable savings of gravel and money. Tests on this method have been made over the past 5 years. 1. Existing alignment must be changed as little as possible, 2. Large stone in the existing road increases costs, 3. Traffic on new structure does not seem to affect quality, 4. Climatic conditions must be taken into account. Gravel roads so far strengthened by cement stabilisation have performed very well. /TRRL/
