TUNNEL TESTS TAME CANADIAN WINDS
This article gives a brief account of the Canadian national facilities used for civil engineering purposes. The facilities include the reproduction of the gustiness of natural wind and of the increase in wind speed with height. After reference to the use of the facilities to study wind action on buildings, mention is made of the damaging effect of winds on the decks of suspension bridges and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge failure which led to the investigations of the aerodynamic stability of such decks and their response to wind turbulence. Longs Creel bridge is given as a typical example of the evolution of aerodynamically-stable box section road decks and similar investigations to establish the critical wind speeds at which motion occurs in cables and other susceptible components of bridges is outlined. The remainder of the article is concerned with the effect of wind on transmission lines and studies that have been made in relation to two towers on Breton Island heavy water plant. /TRRL/
