CHALK PROBLEMS BEATEN ON HERTS BY-PASS
The construction of the a505 by-pass of great offley and particularly the difficulties encountered in handling the very wet chalk deposits are discussed. A large volume of the chalk that had to be shifted had a high moisture content which is reported to have become putty-like on handling, making compaction difficult. Three methods of overcoming chalk handling problems are described: mixing the chalk with glacial deposits when available, scraping a thin layer of chalk and leaving it on an embankment to gain strength, and using loadrig shovels in preference to scrapers for excavating, in order to retain the nature of the chalk. It is also pointed out that because of the presence of very wet chalk, more reliable results of compaction were obtained by only rolling the filling material until it heaved and then testing for compaction, rather than using a fixed number of passes which could have resulted in over compaction. The drainage by means of lagoons constructed in the chalk is also described. /TRRL/
