THE EFFECT OF THE 50 MILE/H LIMIT ON SPEEDS AND HEADWAYS AT THE NORTHERN END OF THE M1 MOTORWAY
During December 1973 speeds and headways were measured by radar at the northern end of the M1 motorway. Measurements made on the slow and centre lanes were analysed separately to determine mean speeds of passenger cars including light commercial vehicles and mean speeds of heavy and medium commercial vehicles. It was found that the effect of the speed limit was to reduce mean speeds by about 10 mile/h and to decrease standard deviation of speeds. The limit did not appear to affect headway distributions. /TRRL/
