FULLY-AUTOMATED ACQUISITION AND PROCESSING OF TRAFFIC DATA
This article describes means to collect basic traffic data within a real-time matrix and record them in computer- readable form. The data carrier is a standard 0.5-in. nine-track magnetic tape. The recording format is 800 BPI NRZI and is IBM 360/370 compatible. Subsequent computer processing of these source data not only yields an accurate traffic count, but also establishes these parameters for each vehicle: speed, length and time gap to preceding vehicle. The source data are collected simultaneously for each lane of multi-lane highways and take into account such driver behaviour as passing, lane changing and lane straddling. A data collection run is normally preceded by manual inputs of basic information such as location, date, hour, weather and road condition. It is explained in general terms how the raw data are processed by the computer software for various end products in either printed or plotted form. /Author/TRRL/
