ANIMATED SIGNS WARN MOTORISTS OF DANGEROUS HIGHWAYS
Animated traffic signs in bright colors are being employed in California to forewarn motorists of particularly hazardous intersections. The animation is achieved by rotating light wave filters on the back of the sign. The effectiveness of a "Do Not Enter" sign at a freeway off-ramp was tested by the installation of two cameras at the ramp turn-off and close to the freeway. The first camera determined how many drivers were still able to turn back after realizing their mistakes. After the animated warning sign was installed, the cameras recorded 75 percent fewer wrong-way entries per month. Although these traffic signs could be adapted to many highway signing functions, they are still being used only for high-accident locations. They continue to be tested in various situations.
