MARINE TURBINE IN-SERVICE EXPERIENCE

In mid-1967 the Royal Malaysian Navy took delivery of four Vosper Fast Patrol Boats of the "Brave" type equipped with Rover 15/90 gas turbines. Using a total of 14 engines they have accumulated over 25,000 hours of service. One engine is still in its original position and has achieved 2950 running hours. Experience has lowered the time for remodeling a defective engine, installing a replacement and running up for test from three days to eight hours. Excessive carbonation of flame tubes has made it necessary to have them cleaned every 90 hours, but two modified tubes which are now being tested have so far shown greatly reduced carbonation. There is a water wash of the compressor and turbine daily on shutdown, a wash/soak with detergent and kerosene every 100 hours, and mandatory preservation by WD40 injection on engines which will stand idle for more than 72 hours. Provided that there is no mal-operation, running hours in excess of 3000 are expected in the future.
