RICHARDS BAY AND SISHEN LINES REACH CONSTRUCTION PEAK
With the first section of South African Railways' Richards Bay line opening and Iscor's Sishen-Salidanha railway due to be completed by the middle of next year, engineering work on both routes is near completion. Construction has been to heavy-duty standards throughout for the bulk mineral traffic envisaged, and both routes are to be electrified after initial operation by diesel traction. Richards Bay- Ermelo is to be SAR'S testbed for 25 kV 50 Hz traction, while 50 kV ac has been chosen for Sishen-Saldanha.
