SYSTEM SAID TO CUT EMISSIONS, FUEL USE
THE TWIN GOALS OF REDUCING AIR POLLUTION AND INCREASING THE ECONOMY OF AUTOMOBILES MAKE A DEVICE WHICH WOULD ACHIEVE BOTH VERY DESIRABLE TO THE INDUSTRY. IT IS THOUGHT BY MANY THAT THE OPTIMIZER, DEVELOPED BY DR. P.H. SCHWEITZER MAY BE THE BEST HOPE FOR SUCH A SYSTEM. THIS DEVICE IS A CONTROL SYSTEM WITH THE PRINCIPAL FUNCTION OF OPTIMIZING SPECIFIC FUEL CONSUMPTION. IT WILL MEET THE 1976 INTERIM AMERICAN EMISSION STANDARDS AND WILL IMPROVE BY 30% FUEL ECONOMY OVER CONVENTIONALLY CONTROLLED CARS. THE SYSTEM IS AN ADAPTIVE ONE IN WHICH THE OUTPUT THROUGH FEEDBACK INFLUENCES THE INPUT. AT THE MOMENT THE CONTROL SYSTEM BEING DEVELOPED IS AN ELECTRONIC ONE. THE SENSOR, BY MONITORING SPEED CHANGES CAN INFORM THE CONTROL SYSTEM WHETHER POWER IS INCREASING OR DECREASING AT THE MOMENT. THE LOGIC ALSO RECEIVES SIGNALS FROM A DITHER AND BY COMPARING THE TWO SIGNALS DECIDES WHETHER AN INCREASE OR DECREASE IN THE CONTROL PARAMETER WILL IMPROVE ENGINE POWER. THE APPROPRIATE COMMAND IS THEN TRANSMITTED TO THE EXECUTOR. 20,000 MILES OF ROAD TESTS HAVE SHOWN THE OPTIMIZER TO BE RELIABLE AND EFFICIENT. /TRRL/
