THE EFFECT OF INCREASED FUEL PRICES ON CAR TRAVEL
The article draws on information on the generalised cost of car usage, on the elasticity of demand for travel and on the relationship between speed and traffic volumes to estimate the effects of a postulated range of higher petrol prices on the levels of car traffic in urban areas. Contrasting likely future car traffic with what may have been expected under mid-1973 conditions, the article suggests that even where it is most sensitive to cost change, higher petrol prices alone seem unlikely to bring about any major reduction in private vehicle traffic until they approach found1 a gallon at January 1974 prices. /Author/TRRL/
