BICYCLING LAWS IN THE UNITED STATES
In passing the Highway Safety Act of 1973, Congress suggested that a complete investigation of bicycle and pedestrian safety be conducted. This document presents a review of the bicycle-related laws of 50 states and of 50 randomly selected communities. The authors site the Uniform Vehicle Code and Model Traffic Ordinance definitions, state laws and Municipal ordinances of each topic discussed. These topics include the legal status of bicycles, accident requirements and rules of the road, special rules for the operation of bicycles, bicycle registration, dealer regulation, special procedures and penalties, enabling legislation and miscellaneous bicycle laws.
