INDUSTRY MOVES TO METRICS-WITHOUT CONGRESS

The delay in legislation to coordinate the conversion to the metric system should not delay industry from moving to metrics. About half of the top 500 industrial companies in the U.S. are in the process of converting, thus producing a domino effect. Firms with international markets and operations appear to be the leaders in the switch, due to their dealings with metric countries. Some aspects of metrication discovered by such companies as Regal-Beloit, Honeywell Inc. Timken Co., Deere & Co., and Rockwell International are described, and sensitivity guidelines are presented. It is pointed out that costs will probably be lower than anticipated, and that training should be selective. Pressure to convert is being brought ot bear on U.S. firms from such sources as the European Community. The directive states that countries trading with EC countries must, by 1977, use SI metric. One of the first priorities in going to metrication is the development of standards.
