TRAINING FOR FAULT DIAGNOSIS

With the growing complexity of shipboard equipment, training for fault diagnosis is of increasing importance. In the British Royal Navy a new system known as the Function Identified Maintenance System has been adopted as a training program in fault diagnosis. The system consists of a basic stage in which the trainee is taught the principles of fault diagnosis and the logical strategy used in approaching problems, and the application stage where the trainee uses the equipment he is being trained to maintain. The functionally identified maintenance system depends to a very large degree on suitably prepared maintenance documents. These documents explain the logical processes of maintenance, diagnosis, and repair to the technician for each piece of equipment involved. This system allows semi-skilled personnel to take over skilled jobs in some cases. This training procedure insures that the maintainer approaches his task in a logical manner, and the documentation provides faster insight into fault location and rectification.
