SOIL STABILIZATION TEST AT THE SWEDEN BRIDGE IN VIENNA - A NEW APPLICATION OF RADIO NUCLIDES IN BUILDING

As part of the preliminary work for the construction of the underground railway tunnel tubes under the Danube canal, experimental injections were made to stabilize the soil, but these were not successful. Following this an attempt was made to develop a control procedure for routine injections using radioactive marking substances. Based on measurements made of filter rate and direction of flow, an assessment was able to be made of the condition of the soil and thus of the effectiveness of soil stabilizing injections. The testing methodology (central boreholes in which to introduce the water and the inspection equipment) are described in detail. The results of the four tests showed that the method used appears to effect a workable control of injections for stabilization and possible also for support. /TRRL/
