ACCIDENT BLACK SPOTS. WAYS OF PREVENTING ACCIDENTS

If during accident studies the police consider that certain traffic control or road engineering measures are necessary, they have to make proposals for eliminating accident black spots to the traffic or road authorities. Cross roads and junctions are often black spots. They can be made less dangerous by the installation of turning lanes or islands, improvement of visibility and good siting of traffic signs. Careful considerations are necessary before abandoning the basic rule of right before left and before deciding whether it is necessary to install traffic signals. Accident black spots may also occur on open sections of road, and these may be able to be eliminated by traffic control or road engineering measures such as improvement of visibility distance, careful design of bends, segregation of transport modes, increasing the skidding resistance of surfacings, speed limits and prohibitions on overtaking. /TRRL/
