TECHNICAL DEFECTS AS A CAUSE OF ACCIDENTS. AIMS OF POLICE TRAFFIC SUPERVISION
TECHNISCHE MAENGEL ALS UNIFALLURSACHE ZIELE DER POLIZEILICHEN VERKEHRSUEBERWACHUNG
Despite legislation obliging the vehicle driver or owner to maintain his vehicle in good technical condition, technical defects and neglect cause accidents. Various government statistics illustrate the scope of defects and accidents established. An analysis of the causes is contained in the studies carried out by Meyer, Jacob and Stiefel in the years 1959 to 1961. This analysis was continued in the HUK Association evaluation of 63084 records of traffic accidents involving serious injury. Technical defects associated with individual accident types are explained. On average they are involved in 2.4 percent of the cases. Studies of various types of cars showed that makes having a number of defects are also involved in high numbers of a specific type of accident. Recommendations relating to the objectives of police supervision of vehicles are being derived from present studies and experience.
