CONCRETE PAVEMENTS IN FINLAND

There are very few concrete pavements in Finland; at the moment only 14 km of concrete road are under traffic. Concrete pavements, however, aroused interest lately. One of the factors causing this interest is the pavement wear caused by studded tyres. It is a rough estimate that studded tyres cost approximately 100 million Finnish marks mainly for maintenance each year. The better wear resistance of concrete pavements compared with bituminous pavements has led to the construction of two separate road sections with concrete pavement during the last 3 years, mostly for pavement design and testing purposes after an interval of 13 years. Investigations of wear resistance were made both in laboratory on a test road machine and on the road. In addition to wear resistance the concrete pavement must have resistance against frost and salt. Measurements on the road and in the laboratory show that the average wear of pavement, or the average depth of wear per one million vehicles with studded tyres under constant wear is approximately 1 to 3 mm. /TRRL/
