LOUISIANA WEIGHS TRUCKS ON THE RUN TO HELP LENGTHEN LIFE OF PAVEMENT
A 9-mile test section with 14 areas composed of different thickness of pavement, and computerized equipment that can weigh vehicles while they are moving at normal speeds, will be utilized in a study aimed at finding a more durable road pavement for a uniquely rainy climate. The study which will evaluate the current highway design criteria, will seek to obtain accurate data on truck traffic. A project to test the accuracy of the computerized equipment is described. The computer is programed to record only vehicles with wheel weights of 1,500 lbs or more. The speed, length of the truck distance between axles and total wieght are also recorded. Preliminary results show the accuracy to be plus or minus 8 percent of the exact weight. The importance of this equipment in future highway planning is noted.
