PORE SIZES AND STRENGTH OF COMPACTED CLAY
The methods used by the author to compact specimens are discussed, and comments are made on the pronounced density gradients produced by the static compacted specimens. The discusser has demonstrated that for C-phi soils at least, the technique of Sridharan offers no significant improvement. For a statically compacted sand-kaolin mix, changes in the molding saturation produced more statistically significant changes in the median pore radii and pore volumes than changes in the compacted dry density. It has also been found that for kaolin-sand mixes with clay content between 30 and 50 percent, samples may be prepared for porosimetry by drying at 45 to 60 deg C under vacuum of mercury. This procedure does not lead to significant linear shrinkage for specimens compacted at molding saturations between 70 and 95 percent. Soil suction values suggest that any structure alterations in the soil resulting from the drying process are minimal. It is therefore concluded that vacuum drying may provide a viable alternative to freeze drying for some categories of soil.
