NOT TECHNIQUES FOR THE PREDICTION OF ADHESIVE FAILURE LOCI PRIOR TO BONDING
Alclad aluminum 2024-T3 samples have been given standard adherence surface preparations followed by deliberate contamination in specific regions. The contamination was two monolayers of erucic acid deposited from a water surface to simulate organic contamination. Also dry and greasy finger prints were placed on some samples. The contaminated areas were easily detected by the surface tools, ellipsometry, surface potential difference and photoelectron emission. Each of these techniques is nondestructive in as much as the samples are not touched or changed by the measurements. After bonding and fracture of the bonds, it was found that interfacial failure was predominantly in the previously detected contamination region and that degradation of bond strength resulted, except for the dry finger print. Each of these tools or a combination of them may prove valuable for monitoring parts to detect improper surfaces prior to adhesive bonding. The surface tools monitor the surface with a resolution of approximately 0.2 in. (0.51 cm). /Author/
