This paper summarizes the geology and land conditions in France, and reviews the recent changes in piling techniques. Changes in the specifications are also reviewed briefly. The technical changes concern the following areas: a) methods for checking the integrity of pile shafts and barrettes; and b) methods for constructing piles and barrettes. The methods for in situ testing of the carrying load, and the material from which the pile is made have also changed in recent years and are reviewed briefly. The market for piles in France is also reviewed. For the covering abstract see IRRD 862422.
