RAPID NUCLEAR TESTS FOR SOILS AND MATERIALS
PRUEHAS NUCLEARES RAPIDAS DE SUELOS Y MATERIALES
Nuclear test methods enable the moisture content and density of materials such as bitumen, soil, concrete and inert materials to be rapidly determined. After outlining the principles governing nuclear measurement techniques, the author describes the new nuclear counter nic 5 for measuring moisture content and density. The nic 5 is a watertight device with a calibrating support. The compact electronic components consist of transistors and integral circuits except for the sensor tubes and high-voltage regulator. Energy is supplied by nine nickel-cadmium rechargeable cells. The source for the unit is 4.5 millicurium of radium-beryllium, or 10 millicurium of cesium, or 50 millicurium of americium/beryllium. Details are given of the two typical forms of operation of the device: back-scattering and direct transmission /TRRL/
