LOCATION OF JOINT DOWEL BARS IN CONCRETE SURFACINGS BY RADIOACTIVE MEANS
DETERMINACION DE LA POSICION DE LOS PASADORES EN JUNTAS DE PAVIMENTOS DE HORMIGON MEDIANTE MARCADO CON FUENTES RADIACTIVAS
The authors recall one of the disadvantages of rigid pavements: the discontinuity in the surfacing caused by expansion joints, which results in an uncomfortable ride. To remedy this defect, it is necessary to determine the relative position of the slabs, so that only expansion movements parallel to the axis of the alignment can occur. To achieve this, metal dowel bars 50 cm apart are placed in the joints parallel to the axis of the road. This parallel position can be controlled by means of destructive tests as non-destructive tests give inaccurate results. If the extremities of the dowel bars are marked by radioactive means, it is then possible to locate their exact position without having to extract any sample. This article describes those tests and results obtained, the latter being extremely satisfactory from the economic and technical point of view. The radioactive source used can be safely handled without any protection. /TRRL/
