GENERAL MOTORS CALLS FOR STRICT ENFORCEMENT ON MOTOR CARRIER, TIRE RULES IF EPA TRUCK PROPOSAL IS TO BE EFFECTIVE

In response to the Environmental Protection Agency's truck noise emission standards, General Motors Corporation has called for strict enforcement of the interstate motor carrier regulations and the creation of new emission standards to reduce the number of dBA's for future model years. GM has also recommended new standards to reduce tire noise by elimination of noisy tire design. Tables depicting costs and dBA level changes with enforcement of motor carrier and tire regulations show both freeway and urban speeds to reach lower dBA levels than without the enforcement. Customer costs for quieter vehicles would rise in proportion to the reduction in noise level. International Harvester noted that the increased noise regulations will limit the selection of vehicle models and components available on the market. B.F. Goodrich suggested that the tire research program be more fully developed before the new emission standards are included in truck regulations, since tire pavement interaction noise will affect the low-speed noise standards.
