THE FUTURE OF OUTDOOR ADVERTISING

Missouri's efforts to prevent highway loss of funds and protest restrictions imposed by the commission on Highway Beautification are briefly reviewed. The Missouri removal statute provides for administrative hearings on notices for removal of unlawful signs. The removal of signs will adversely affect small motels and those motels on older, relocated highways which depend solely upon signing for their business. The results of an impact study survey are presented. A significant revelation was that 61 percent of the interviewed public prefered to leave the billboards for roadside services as they were; twenty eight percent desired partial control. As the population increases, so will business on the highways which will lead to unzoned commercial areas and a further influx of billboards.
