VEHICLE SUPPORT WITH COMPLIANT AIR BEARINGS
Continuing developments in high speed ground transportation have necessitated new technical advances in vehicle suspension and guidance. An example of this is the externally pressurized air bearing with a large compliant surface. This article gives a complete description of the bearing system, and a comphensive analysis of compliant bearings operating on smooth surfaces. A set of curves showing the operating performance characteristics of the bearings are given in several figures, with accompanying explanations. The principles of this system may well be applied in the future to high speed ground transportation vehicles.
