GRAVEL-EMULSION MIXTURES
LAS MEZCLAS GRAVA-EMULSION
Details are given of the stabilization of fine gravel with emulsified bituminous binders: bituminous binder and surface-active agent contained in the emulsion. Mention is made of tests on gravel-emulsion mortars and on gravel- emulsion bituminous mixtures. Manufacture and laying must be carried out with great care, as the emulsion could break when leaving the mixer, anionic emulsions can present problems because of the excessive stability of the emulsion, compaction must be carried out by means of vibrating rollers and sometimes by means of pneumatic-tyred rollers, and the density of the mixture must be established according to the modified Proctor test. In conclusion, methods of designing pavements containing gravel-emulsion mixtures are reviewed, and some structures built in Spain with this stabilized material are described.
