RATIO BETWEEN THE CBR INDEX AND THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE SOIL
RELACION ENTRE EL INDICE CBR Y EL ESTADO FISICO DEL SUELO
Theoretical and experimental investgations were conducted in order to establish a relation between the CBR index and the parameters representative of the physical condition of the ground. The purpose of the study is to reduce the number of laboratory tests when applying this method to road pavement projects. The study is based on the dependence between the physical condition and the mechanical behaviour of the soil. The physical parameters considered as determining the "physical condition" were: dry density of the soil, specific weight of the solid particles, soil moisture, and degree of saturation. It is enough to determine three parameters, as the fourth depends on the other three. The author stresses the relation between the CBR index and the physical parameters of the soil corresponding to the initial moment of the penetration test. To establish the relation, A minimum of two tests with different physical parameters are required. The relation obtained serves to forecast CBR index values according to changes in the physical condition resulting from in situ compaction, due to the variation in humidity and compaction energy. /TRRL/
