PRACTICAL METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE MAXIMUM DENSITY OF SOILS
METODO PRACTICO PARA DETERMINAR LA DENSIDAD MAXIMA DE LOS SUELOS
With the object of rapidly determining the maximum density of soil, without carrying out compaction tests, a formula is proposed which gives the value of maximum density as a function of the specific weight of the grains at optimum moisture content and volume of air in the pores after compaction. This formula, derived by V.I. Birula, requires prior knowledge of the optimum moisture content; Birula himself proposes relating the optimum moisture content to the liquid limit. Both the factor of proportionality and the volume of air in the pores have been obtained by means of mathematical calculations based on a large number of tests carried out by the author on different clayey Cuban soils. /TRRL/
